Celebrate this season of renewal, abundance and love with some new family traditions. Here are seven ideas:

1. Create a kindness wreath for your front door. Begin with a small, plain wreath. A week or two before Easter, distribute 10 or more ribbons in bright spring colors to each family member. Whenever someone reaches out to another in kindness during the week, another ribbon is tied onto the wreath.

2. Fill a wicker basket with handmade cards featuring cheerful messages and perhaps a small gift or two. Leave the basket anonymously on a friend's doorstep, along with a request that they empty the basket and do the same for someone else.

3. Sit down with your children and each create a special collage or drawing that depicts what Easter means to each of you. The artwork can become a permanent part of your family's Easter decorations. Before they go into storage at the end of the season, scan them or take a photograph so you can record the artwork in your family journal or scrapbook album.

4. Videotape (or audiotape) young children singing a fun seasonal song. These renditions of "Little Bunny Foo Foo" and "Here Comes Peter Cottontail" will be treasured for years to come. Make copies and send the tapes to family and friends whom you can't be with on Easter.

5. When it's time for your annual Easter get together, present each guest with a 6x6 or 8x8 sheet of cardstock and ask them to handwrite a message especially for the Easter holiday - perhaps ways that they are feeling joy, gratitude, or hopefulness. Snap a photo of each guest and create a simple (and quick) mini scrapbook album as a keepsake, featuring one page for each guest - with their photo and Easter message.

6. Make a Garden Journal. Cover an ordinary dime-store composition book or journal with spring patterned papers or magazine clippings of your favorite flowers. Now record the process of creating your family garden this year. Make sure to include pictures of each of you working in the soil. Don't forget the journaling - and lots of flower pressings.

7. Buy or make handmade Easter greeting cards and send them to friends and family. Make a point to send out at least seven cards this season to people with whom you'd like to create a deeper friendship.

The Pooka is the Anglicisation of the Old Gaelic word Puca, it refers to the most feared and respected fairy in Celtic folklore. According to legend, the Puca can metamorphose into a wide variety of shapes, it may appear as a horse, rabbit, goat, dog or goblin. However, it most commonly assumes the shape of a dark horse with yellow eyes, it roams the countryside at night smashing down fences and gates, terrifying and scattering livestock.

Certain agricultural traditions surround the Puca, at the end of harvesting, a small deformed goblin shows up in search of a small share of the crops, if he is not placated he will wreak havoc, so the croppers leave behind a small amount of the crop which has become known as the Puca's share to satisfy the ravenous goblin. Only one man ever managed to tame a puca - Brian Boru, when high King of Ireland, managed to ride a puca until it surrendered to his will. He forced the puca to make two promises - firstly that he would no longer torment Christians and secondly that he would no longer attack Irishmen except those who were drunk are were roaming with evil intent.

The puca agreed but has the centuries rolled by it forgot it's bargain and returned to it's old ways. However, in some areas the Puca is spoke about with quite an amount of deference and is treated with more respect than fear. It is stated that if the Puca is treated with respect they can actually turn out to be beneficial rather than malevolent.

Halloween is the one of the oldest celebrations we have. It is second in popularity only to Christmas in the United States. Today it is seen as a time for fun, family, and friends. But, at one time Halloween was a time of fear and dread.

Halloween origin dates back thousands of years to the Celtic festival known as Samhain. November 1 was the start of their new year - the end of summer and harvest, the beginning of winter and coldness.

On October 31, the Celts believed the ghosts of all the dead would return and mingle with the living. They believed the souls of those who had died during the year traveled into the afterworld on that day.

People gathered to sacrifice fruits, vegetables, and animals. Bonfires were lit in honor of the dead. The huge fires were also expected to help the dead on their journey and to keep the dead away from the living. The Celts believed that on that day all types of beings were at large including witches, ghosts, and demons. All beings that were part of the dark and dreadful afterworld.

Wearing costumes can be traced back to this Celtic period when it was thought that the souls of the dead were out and around, along with fairies, witches, and demons. Offerings of food and drink were left out to placate them. People began dressing like these fearful beings, performing antics in exchange for food and drink. They wore animal skins draped on their backs, with masks to cover their faces to mimic the evil spirits or placate them.

Young and old alike continue to celebrate this holiday and dress up in costumes to go trick-or-treating or to attend a group gathering. Today we call this gathering a party. To the ancient Gaels, it was the festival of the dead. To this day, witches, ghosts, and skeleton figures of the dead are still among the favorite costumes.

It is easy to see the roots of Halloween origin derived from the ancient festival and how modern traditions are indeed based on the ancient fears of death and evil spirits.

• Create round lollipop ghosts.

Lollipop ghosts are a great giveaway for all the kids who will go trick or treating on Halloween. You would need sucker-style lollipops - the bigger and rounder the candy, the better. All you need to do is wrap a tissue paper or two, place the round lollipop in the middle and gently gather the material around the head of the lollipop. Use a red yarn or ribbon to make the distinction between the head and the body of the ghost lollipop. Then, you can either glue two movable eyes and draw a 'scared' mouth to form the head of the ghost - or you can just use a marker to draw the entire face of the ghost. Not only will these make great Halloween decors - they can also be given away to trick-or-treaters.

• Create your very own Halloween rings critters.

You can probably buy ready made rings from toy shops and use them as the base for this project. Have some white glue, pompoms and goggle eyes handy. Divide the kids into pairs of two and make sure that they have enough material to make a ring for themselves. All they need to do is glue the eyes to the pompoms which will serve as the body of the critter. Then, it can either be tied or glued on to the ring securely. These critters can take the shape of spiders, octopuses or an insect complete with antennae.

• Create egg carton bats.

You can make one bat out of three egg holder sections by cutting an entire egg carton into four pieces. The middle part of the bat will serve as its head, and two sections on the end will serve as its head. Paint each bat black, allow them to dry and use googly eyes to decorate the head. If you want to, you can even place a string on the head of each bat so that they can be used as hanging decors for your Halloween party.
